What is Ergonomics for kids?

Ergonomics is the science of how people interact with their work and their surroundings. Kid's "work" is school and play.   Ergonomics can be applied to the home, the school, driving, or even with kids and backpacks.

Ergonomics is concerned with "neutral positioning" (not sitting crooked) - this is the basic alignment principal used in assessment of a kid in their environment.  We look at the position of the spine, legs, trunk and arms while doing their activity.

Ergonomics allows people, and the equipment/tools they use to function in the safest, most effective and comfortable way possible.   Kids need their own stuff, too, and that includes a computer and desk that fits them. Teach your kids how to sit and work at your computer-but better yet, have a workspace designed just for them!  Because equipment, like computer desks and chairs, should adapt to the kid.

Ergonomics focuses on the person, not the equipment. Therefore, the equipment-like a backpack- should adapt to the person, rather than the person adapting to the equipment.

Kids  can follow these suggestions to prevent neck, back, and hand pain.  Go to www.ergokids.com for ideas on how to pick, load, and wear a backpack.
